It is retained by a metal ring which is screwed into the transmission tunnel after first passing it through the cutaway in the carpet. The best toy I've found so far. I have a 4 pound toy poodle who is definitively a big chewer. He never rips up his stuffed toys but has worked his way through a huge amount of "tough" chew toys made for toy breeds. This one is tiers above the rest. Not a single piece is falling off, he LOVES it, and the teeth on rubber sound when he's chewing on it is really quite cute.
